Winter training - half-marathon, Ripoll

Hola a todos!

Its been a while - what you been up to? Getting in those winter miles i hope!

I'm currently on my running block and had good friend Jamie Reid over for a few days running. We found some cracking new trail routes surrounding Girona including some tasty climbs up to St. Miguel. Seems he got the benefit after coming through strongly on the last mile to take 2nd behind Glen Stewart at the Glasgow Uni 5 mile RR on Saturday. Meanwhile, I had a decent showing at the Ripoll Half-Marathon, running 74:49 for 8th place. Ripoll is in the far north of Catalunya and serves as a great base for exploring the Pyrenees. As you can imagine the scenery is incredible and the 300-odd field had a testing out and back course to deal with, from Ripoll to Sant Joan de Abedesses. There was some decent quality vying for the 500 Euro first price while the same fantastic support was in place. Road COMPLETELY CLOSED to all traffic, plenty of motorbikes in attendance and usual local TV coverage. I started off very steadily, coming through from 16th to 12th at half-way (36 mins first 10k) before picking a few off on the road back (34:30 2nd 10k, 17mins last 5k).

Here's a photo of me finishing. It was f****** freezing and i wore a LS tee, only rolling up my sleeves for that last 5k. All in, no' bad for 2 weeks at 50 miles steady running. I'm going to try and put it up another wee notch, around 65 miles, and have the Girona XC on Sunday.

Hasta la proxima!

Steven

PS: weather update: lovely sunny weather and a nice 15 average :)
